what are you worth?
For those of you who didn’t know this, CMJ has a value system which they utilize to create the weekly chart. A multiplier is assigned to your station, which is used to weigh your chart in comparison to other stations.’ Quite correctly, CMJ assumes that a station with little to no wattage, broadcasting in a low-density population area, cannot possibly have the same impact as a powerful station broadcasting in or near a metropolis. There are 30 spots on your chart which are multiplied by your value. The top spot on your chart is worth 30 point times your multiplier. The last spot is worth one point times your multiplier. A station with a ‘6’ value has six times the impact on the chart than a station with a ‘1’ multiplier. Thus, big stations’ chart positions are worth more. Often, however, several small stations without much clout are bullied into charting records to approximate the value of a large station. The point here is to create chart positions. So, numerically, six WGKR’s are worth one KCRW. It goes without saying that a record doing very well at KCRW has at least 50 times the impact of it getting played on as many WGKR’s, but that’s not the point. Charts are what make the boss happy—forget sales.
These numbers are dated, as CMJ has gone through a revision of the values assigned to stations. Nonetheless, highly valued stations probably got higher values, and lower stations probably didn’t get much. Also, not all values could be found. So, if your station is not included below, find a station that is pretty darn similar to yours, and its value may correspond.
