Here is an idea for a record insert. Any punk band that signs to a major label that still had an ounce of integrity and guts left could put something like this inside their releases.

This record is but the tip of the iceberg. just a small part of what's really going on in the international punk community. Our success has been built upon the foundation of thousands of people's work over the years, folks who have slaved away with little or no financial or artistic reward, putting out their own bands' records, putting out fanzines, starting small independent labels and distributions.

If you don't know shit about any of this, it's no accident, as the major labels, MTV and other arms of the corporate mass media try to control exactly what it is that you can hear and know about. And in controlling your access to information, they have a much better chance in forming the boundaries of both your musical taste and your political/creative thinking.

If you'd like to find out more about the independent scene, its almost 20 year history in resisting governmental and corporate control by releasing music that doesn't conform to "mainstream" standards, and want to get opened up to a whole new world of music, ideas, and actions, then here's a list of some bands, 'zines and labels that will hopefully lead you to even more contacts, communication, friends and grassroots participation.

Having done this, the band could then list a ton of addresses on the back side for their listeners to check out. It should come as no great surprise that no band that's "gone on" to a major has done this. Is it because they have such big egos that they feel their "success" is based solely on their "great talent", or is it because they are generally thoughtless, or is it because they were just using the underground in the first place? Guess we'll never know.
